Grik

 Half-way town

Many or most people have heard of the name Grik. Many would even love the idea of having being there at once. Travel the so-called East-West Highway.

That highway opened eons ago has since lost its novelties. But - many are still waiting for that opportunity.

Like all remote township, the Rest House remained the most welcome sight to travelers and also a novel idea. Especially in Grik. In 1999, the town had remained very much the same. Little changes. The Rest house white modern brick building could easily be the best in town. That speaks much about its importance. Today of course, a new town ship just east of it towards Banding Island had sprung up. It is a much up to date town ship.

But lets go back to what I saw in 1999.

Its location right alongside with other governmental administrative offices, the location was ideal and superb.

The buildings in Grik was a modern structure set in a rectangle shape.

A large dinning hall forming one of the sides. the other half the rooms. Most rooms were located on the first floor.

The downstairs portion served as car park, store rooms. Another detached shed was also available for added space -also for storage.

Not only was the building looked square but the rooms too were arranged in rectangular format.

So there was a sort of air well. Within the center of the rectangle was this indoor garden.

All rooms had external views. The building perched high. So you can expect the good quality view of rolling hills.

A shown in this bottom photograph. you could almost make out the long corridor. Here this end of the corridor seen in the right, ran from the reception to the canteen or should I say, restaurant.

On entering the Rest House, a usual the  reception area.

The dinning hall behind was at the end of this corridor seen on the right.

A common corridor joined all the rooms in a rectangular fashion.  It was easy that the inn keepers could see what was going on in the corridor. From the reception. I suppose that this point was critical as inn keepers were expected to kept sharp vigilance on the movements  those eligible occupants. Grik was a rural and a very religious township.

At last found one picture that gives you the type of view that you would get.

Those rooms facing the frontage would get this view of the rolling valleys.

The recreation park for Grik was also in front of the Rest House.

We had stayed in this Rest House for a couple of times now, and it is still the best and decent accommodation available for miles around. Once, I was there and the rest house was full. I stayed in a Chinese operated hotel in the shop houses, among the traveling sales person. That was a utter change.
