Genting Highlands - 22nd December
I was prompted by a tip
from Yeoh that the White hooded Babblers were seen in the bamboo
forest of the Old Pump House Road. I had planned this trip there with my Kiara Bunch.
One point to note, most of them
in this group, except Henry, were not Birders. In the wee hours of
the morning, everything went fine, including the weather back in PJ.
The moment we hit the Highway to Genting, the dense fog just
enveloped the road ahead. We had no problem with that scenario as we would need about a
30 minutes for breakfast. The clouds could had found to get drifted
away. At least that was what we thought.
About 9.00 am, we could hardly see 50
meters in front of the car, let alone identifying colors on birds
that we would bumped into. So we put Plan B into action and that was
to go above the clouds. Yes, we were almost right. The weather up
there on the Highland Road was fairly clear - off and on. The clouds
were drifting in and out. We hiked up the hills and were promised
"Birds" with lots of calls. Then they appeared -dashing past the
road. Mountain Warblers. There were Mountain Bulbuls on the
road. A large Raptor rushed off as we approached. We reached the end
of the trail at about 10.00am. It was already well past feeding time,
still the strays
jumping were around. Wagtail, Niltava, Tailorbird and one Chestnut
capped Laughingthrush. The last one, I didn't expect to see the bird there. Then
further back on the way there were a couple of Minlas
We made our way back to be met by another
fair size bird wave that lasted a good 10 minutes. The clouds nearly
shaded the silhouette of the surrounding trees, guessing the type of
birds that flew past was meaningless.
That ended a morning of unsuccessful
birding.
